Versace and The Americans Win Gold at the 2018 Emmys

Darren Criss and Matthew Rhys both take home trophies on television's biggest night.

All that glitters is gold, at least that's the case for the FX stars who took home big wins at the 2018 Emmy Awards on Monday night.

Both The Americans and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story were honored by their television peers with wins in multiple categories. In total, FX Networks received 12 Emmy Awards for work in front of and behind the camera.

For its incredible final season, The Americans was awarded Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Creator/Executive Producer/Writer Joe Weisberg and Executive Producer/Writer Joel Fields, who told us how emotional it was penning the series finale "START," thanked the "diehard, slightly treasonous fans" and the team that helped create The Americans every week.

"It’s the kind of team you wait your whole life to be on," Weisberg said.

Matthew Rhys won an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for his portrayal as Philip Jennings, his first win after being nominated in that category three times. Backstage, he reminisced on the ending of The Americans, saying he missed “the depth and complexity of these characters."

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story was awarded Outstanding Limited Series, while Executive Producer Ryan Murphy won Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series.

“It was a story I was passionate about very early on,” Murphy said backstage after the win. “I wanted to tell the story. I was in L.A. five years when Andrew Cunanan started his spree. I felt it was a story that needed to be told. The [themes] are as modern as ever.”

Darren Criss was the winner in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series category for his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan, and he took the time onstage to thank Ryan Murphy for the chance to play such a pivotal role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. "Actors are really only as good as the moments they are given and the moments they are granted," he said. "So I am profoundly indebted to my friend Ryan Murphy for entrusting me with this opportunity of a lifetime and for believing in me."
