If you weren’t acting, what would you want to be doing?
I love music. I think that’s how I entered the artistic life, because I was into music at a young age. I’m not sure I was any good, but I was doing it anyway. I was singing and playing the bass. I’m not very good, but I love the trumpet. I would be like Chet Baker. Playing the trumpet and singing, like in a little club.
What's your favorite advice you like to give out to people?
If you always do what you always have done, you will get exactly what you always have gotten. And I just tell that to myself. If something’s not happening, I gotta change what I’m doing. And then there’s a quote from Winston Churchill: "if you’re going through hell, keep going."
When there’s downtime on set, what are you usually doing?
I like to read a lot of literature, whether it’s Tennessee Williams or Arthur Miller, John Patrick Shanley. . .whatever. I just like to read.
Is there a dream theater role that you would love to play?
Well, I’d like to do The Crucible. There's a play called Doubt by John Patrick Shanley which is about religion. I find religion very interesting.
What’s the first thing you do when you get to set?
Coffee. I do coffee and then they look for me and they yell at me because I have to go to makeup and hair. [Laughs]. Even though I don’t take very long.
Mayans M.C. is all new Tuesday nights at 10p on FX.
