Benjamin Cavell was a novelist who hadn’t thought seriously about writing for television until Justified presented him with the opportunity to work for a show based on the work of one of his literary idols, Elmore Leonard.&nbsp;His fiction has appeared in The Best American Mystery Stories and his book, Rumble, Young Man, Rumble (published by Alfred A. Knopf), was named an Amazon.com Breakout Book and an Esquire Best Book of the Year.&nbsp;He is a graduate of Harvard College, where he was a boxer and an editor for The Harvard Crimson.

"Raylan Givens," portrayed by Timothy Olyphant, was born and raised in Harlan, but fled after high school to become a Deputy U.S. Marshal. He wound up in Miami, where his Old West tactics involved him in a shooting and resulted in his transfer to Kentucky. Awakening old enemies and stirring up family entanglements, this season Raylan continues to struggle with his role as an absentee father to the now 5-month-old Willa. Before he can join Willa and her mother, Winona, in Florida, Raylan must tie up one last loose end, he must bring down Boyd Crowder.&nbsp;

Raylan and Boyd dug coal together in Harlan when they were young men. Twenty years later, Raylan and Boyd find themselves on opposite sides of the law. This season, Boyd partners with Wynn Duffy and Katherine Hale to take down one final score - a score he hopes will enable him to leave Harlan forever.&nbsp;

After spending last seasons in prison, Ava negotiated her release by agreeing to serve as Raylan's confidential information against her own fiancé, Boyd. Pinned between the two men, Ava finds herself playing both sides in order to survive.&nbsp;

Raylan's boss and old friend in the Lexington office, Chief Deputy Art Mullen often indulges Raylan's effective but reckless methods. The deputies look to Art for guidance, a father figure who's tough but supportive. This season finds Art recuperating from a life-threatening gunshot wound - a wound he received towards the end of Season 5 while defending Raylan's then girlfriend. He now wonders if this might spell the end of his Marshals Service career.&nbsp;

A former sniper for the Army Rangers, Tim is a deadly shot who has a wry understanding of Raylan's unconventional methods. This season he will be working with Raylan more closely than ever before.&nbsp;

Rachel is the consummate professional and the deputy Art always hoped would succeed him upon his retirement. With Art wounded, Rachel's taken that post a little earlier than expected - albeit in an interim capacity - and she wonders if she will be up to the job.&nbsp;

A high-ranking member of the Dixie Mafia, Duffy's heroin business fell apart at the end of last season. He has now hooked his wagon to Katherine Hale's robbery scheme - a scheme they've contracted Boyd Crowder to implement.
