"Lemuel Cannon," portrayed by Matthew Elam, is Loy’s eldest son. Lemuel is an aspiring trumpet player and dreams of following in the footsteps of the Dizzy Gillespies and Charlie Parkers of the world. Needless to say, this is a source of friction between him and his father.

Career Highlights

Elam will next be seen in the highly anticipated Sopranos feature film The Many Saints of Newark, slated for a March 2021 release. He has also appeared on NBC's Chicago P.D. and on stage at Chicago's Victory Gardens. Elam is a graduate of DePaul University's prestigious Theatre School. &nbsp;

Chris Rock portrays the head of the Cannon crime syndicate, "Loy Cannon," a self-made sophisticate born into an age of brutality. In a perfect world, Loy would be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. But his world isn’t perfect, so Loy used his prodigious intellect to create The Cannon Limited — an empire of a different kind; running numbers, prostitution and protection out of Kansas City.

Loy’s closest friend and most trusted advisor, "Doctor Senator," portrayed by Glynn Turman, is The Cannon Limited’s second-in-command. A second-generation Missouri native, Doctor possesses degrees in both law and economics. He is a man who demands your respect, whether you’re willing to give it or not.

A former Negro League baseball player, "Leon Bittle," portrayed by Jeremie Harris, is the most flashy member of The Cannon Limited. He was raised in Tennessee and served in the Army during WWII where he excelled at killing Germans up close with a bayonet. Leon’s a climber and aspires to be just like Loy someday.

Henchman for the The Cannon Limited, "Omie Sparkman," portrayed by Corey Hendrix, once thrived as an amateur boxer until an injury forced him into early retirement — the injury that gave him his trademark milky eye. Today he specializes in punishing the enemies of Loy Cannon.

"Opal Rackley," portrayed by James Vincent Meredith, is Loy Cannon’s personal bodyguard. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII and fought his way across the Pacific. But despite his service, he returned home to a country that treated him as a second-class citizen.

"Josto," portrayed by Jason Schwartzman, is the impulsive and self-indulgent son of Donatello Fadda and heir apparent to the Fadda Crime Family. Unlike his father, who clawed and scratched his way to the top, Josto has only known plenty, and believes he’s entitled to the wealth and power that his father has amassed.

Josto’s younger brother “Gaetano Fadda,” portrayed by Salvatore Esposito, was raised in Sardinia away from his family. He came of age killing communists for Mussolini and eventually became a kingpin in his own right. A bear of a man, Gaetano believes that a banker should never be more powerful than a soldier.

"Constant Calamita," portrayed by Gaetano Bruno, is the head enforcer for the Fadda Crime Family. If the devil had a cousin, this would be him. Calamita comes across as suave and debonair, but make no mistake, he’s a stone-cold killer.

The adopted son of Donatello Fadda, "Patrick 'Rabbi' Milligan," portrayed by Ben Whishaw, is muscle for the Fadda Crime Family. His life is a testament to simplicity and practicality. Rabbi asks no favors and offers none in return.

"Ebal Violante," portrayed by Francesco Acquaroli, is consigliere to Donatello Fadda and architect of the Milligan Massacre. When Donatello dies, Ebal is left to deal with the Don’s two volatile sons, Josto and Gaetano.

"Thurman Smutny," portrayed by Andrew Bird, is the father of Ethelrida. He’s a proto-beatnik – a man of modern ideas in a world resistant to change. Thurman and his wife, Dibrell, run a funeral home in Kansas City that he inherited from his family. He raises his daughter the best way he can in this complicated time.

"Dibrell Smutny," portrayed by Anji White, is the mother of Ethelrida. Suffice it to say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, for it’s Dibrell who showed Ethelrida how to be a strong woman who marches to the beat of her own drum. Dibrell is determined to do what is necessary for the good of her family.

The narrator of our story, 16-year-old "Ethelrida Pearl Smutny," portrayed by E'myri Crutchfield, is innately self-possessed and wise beyond her years. Daughter of a white father and a black mother, Ethelrida is determined to leave her parents’ mortuary business behind and improve her lot in life through her education.

Nurse "Oraetta Mayflower," portrayed by Jessie Buckley, is a Minnesota native with a folksy accent and sunny disposition. A self-described “Angel of Mercy,” Oraetta believes that her purpose on this “earthly realm” is to bring peace and comfort to the patients in her care.

“Odis Weff,” portrayed by Jack Huston, is a WWII veteran and detective with the Kansas City Police Department. Odis suffers from OCD, but in 1950, he’s just a peculiar fellow who pounds nerve tonic to quiet his anxieties. Odis does not do well in high-stress situations, which can make his job very difficult at times.

“U.S. Marshal Dick ‘Deafy’ Wickware,” portrayed by Timothy Olyphant, is a Utah law man and follower of Brigham Young. Dogged in his pursuit of escaped criminals, some say that Deafy is part hound dog. Incorruptible and devout, Deafy is an unwelcome presence for Kansas City’s criminal underworld.
