Malcolm Spellman is a screenwriter, producer, showrunner and co-owner of Storefront, formally known as Blackball Universe, a record label and multimedia collective. Spellman continues to break down barriers with his ability to write and connect with audiences across all genres.Spellman is currently serving as showrunner, executive producer and writer on FX’s “Snowfall” spinoff “The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.” Previously, Spellman served as executive producer on Netflix’s “Kevin Hart &amp; Chris Rock: Headliners Only,” and FX’s “Hip Hop Uncovered,” a six-part documentary series that takes a deep dive into the paradox of America’s criminalization of the genre and its fascination with the street culture that created it and still exists within it.Previous credits also include co-developer and executive producer on Peacock’s “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" reboot, “Bel-Air,” executive producer on Apple TV+’s “Truth Be Told” starring Octavia Spencer and FOX’s hit show “Empire” for which he worked as both a writer and producer for the first three seasons.Spellman is also creator and executive producer on the highly successful Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The series stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Spellman earned an NAACP Award for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for his work on the show. Following the massive success of the series, Spellman also wrote the hit feature film “Captain America: Brave New World” with co-writer Dalan Musson.Spellman and his wife, Nichelle Tramble Spellman, are currently heading their production company The 51, which develops and produces television and feature films that highlight cultural specificity with universal appeal, popcorn with perspective and scope with swag. Through their company, both showrunners produce projects they care deeply about, while building a community of emerging, diverse and talented voices who have something to say.On the music side, through his indie record label Storefront in Oakland, he represents artist Fantastic Negrito, who won the 2017 and 2019 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album and recently won a third Grammy. Spellman also has various music-driven documentaries in development.Spellman currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
