Aisling Franciosi portrays "Sister Ruth," the youngest of the Sisters. Fragile Ruth is perhaps too eager to impress. She is quick with languages and teaches lace work to the older girls.

Dipika Kunwar portrays "Kanchi," a local girl from the village. Kanchi is enrolled in the lace school at the convent.

Rosie Cavaliero portrays "Sister Briony," the most senior of the Sisters under Clodagh. Briony is her reliable right hand. She organizes supplies and medicines.

Karen Bryson portrays "Sister Philippa," the most spiritual of the Sisters and first to see the dangers presented by Mopu. Philippa tends the garden and has a great love of nature.

Patsy Ferran portrays "Siste Blanche," the gentle Sister loves children and hates conflict. Blanche manages the school.

Nila Aalia portrays "Angu Ayah," the housekeeper at the Palace of Mopu. Angu previously tended Princess Srimati and travelled with her throughout Europe.

Gina McKee portrays "Sister Adela," an old-fashioned nun who was wounded in an uprising in Canton, China. Adela is committed to the discipline of the sisterhood.

Jim Broadbent portrays "Father Roberts," a priest based in Darjeeling. Father Roberts travels to oversee the nuns’ progress at Mopu.

Diana Rigg portrays "Mother Dorothea," the Mother Superior at the convent in Darjeeling. Mother Dorothea offers guidance to Sister Clodagh to help her efforts at Mopu.
