Anthony Maurice Hemingway, born in the Bronx, New York, is an African-American film and television Director and Producer best known for directing a host of critically acclaimed television series like the HBO series The Wire and George Lucas’ WWII action adventure blockbuster film Red Tails, inspired by the heroic Tuskegee Airmen – the first African-American fighter pilots in U.S. military history.

Hemingway has long been fascinated with the art of telling stories, yet it took stepping onto a set as a production assistant while still in high school for him to find his medium. From that day to this, Hemingway has found a way to bring stories to life on screens large and small.

Shortly after his experience on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles set in North Carolina, Hemingway began chasing his passion. He graduated from E.A. Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina and soon became the youngest Second A.D. in the Directors Guild of America at the age of 19 and then the youngest First A.D. at 22 in 1998.

Hemingway’s A.D. experience included work on feature films – Neil Young: Heart of Gold, Changing Lanes, Jawanna Mann, Taxi, Ali, Freedomland and The Manchurian Candidate – as well as acclaimed television series’ – The Corner, Oz, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and The Wire. He has worked with dozens of the top producers and directors of the day, including Aaron Sorkin, Jonathan Demme, Barry Levinson, Scott Rudin, Ryan Murphy and Lee Daniels. Hemingway’s directorial debut came in 2006 on The Wire. Showrunner David Simon said that he proved what they already knew, “that it was time.”

In 2009, Hemingway again joined forces with David Simon, Eric Overymer and Nina Noble on the HBO television series Treme. Hemingway served as both Co-Executive Producer and Director on the series. Since his directorial debut, Hemingway has been in constant demand and has directed episodes of some of the hottest shows on both network and cable television. Those credits include the pilot for Starz’ Power, and WGN’s Underground; episodes of FOX’s Empire, Glee; HBO’s The Newsroom, True Blood, Treme, The Wire; Netflix’s Orange is the New Black; FX’s American Horror Story; AMC’s Low Winter Sun; Showtime’s Shameless; TNT’s Falling Skies; Syfy’s Battlestar Gallactica; NBC’s Heroes; CBS’s CSI:NY; ABC’s Once Upon A Time.

In 2012, Hemingway partnered with former production executive Mark Taylor to launch their eponymous production shingle Hemingway | Taylor and have since compiled a diverse development slate of comedies and dramas for both TV and Film.

Hemingway has earned multiple NAACP Image Award nominations for his work on Treme, Heroes, and Close To Home. In 2012, the Renaissance Foundation and the U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Democratic Leader James Clyburn awarded him with the Passing the Torch Award. In 2008, Hemingway received an AFI Award for his contribution to The Wire. In 2005, the North Carolina Cine Noir Film Festival honored him with the Trailblazer Award.

Hemingway currently resides in Los Angeles.
